REPORTAGER

Some of my travel work featured as a project on the Reportager website

Elin is an Illustration graduate from the University of the West of England, Bristol, though originally from the Llyn Peninsula in North-West Wales. Her work initially begins by experimentation in sketchbooks and on loose paper, combining found imagery with drawings and paintings or anything else she can utilize. By exploring broader themes, Elin has created a diverse and often quite abstract body of work varying from large paintings to more editorial based illustration and moving image outcomes.

UBUD: A Visual Essay from the cultural and artistic heart of Bali Island

I settled for a period of six weeks in Ubud, the cultural and artistic heart of Bali Island, where I was to spend my days volunteering at a local school, practicing yoga and recording the daily hustle and bustle of Balinese life. I was extremely excited to have the space and time to fully record my journey in such a diverse and vibrant surroundings. It was harder than I thought it would be. I found my new surroundings overwhelming and chaotic and it was a challenge to create a visual journal that did justice to the Balinese themselves and the surroundings.

With limited art supplies; I decided to concentrate mostly on drawing. And so it began, with every head turn emerged a new drawing, I could barely keep up with the crazy pace of those around me, and it was hard to capture the moment when every moment was completely different from the other. Busy, overflowing markets, piles of stocks, live animals sometimes caged, carried at the back of old Honda trucks. Crazy traffic jams, scooters weaving in and out of traffic.

Mid February, I flew to Ho Chin Minh City. I tirelessly travelled up the East coast route up to the North of Vietnam and made my way to Hanoi, the capital. I drew anything and everything at any time I had to spare in a pocket size Moleskine sketchbook including several bumpy train trips, sharing a 15-hour sleeper bus and cruising on a junk boat surrounded by 20,000 large limestone islands located in Halong Bay. With Vietnam's stunning blend of influences from so many different cultures, I saw and explored a lot in a very short amount of time. This changed my whole approach as I began to work more freely at a much faster pace.
My drawing became more instinctive; I drew what I saw at the time - in the city, big typographic billboards, every Bàn Xèo and Pho's that I ate and then diverse landscapes, rolling and stretching ahead of me in the countryside. With a few slightly over-exaggerated contexts, my sketchbook became a mash-up of different visuals, merged with a personal expression of my experiences in this truly stunning country.

I flew to Siem Reap, Cambodia at the beginning of March before ending my travels in Thailand. (Grid Sketchbook)
